Grandmother: A Pioneer Like Us (2018)

Grandmother: A Pioneer Like Us was a site-specific installation staged in 2018 at WAS Gallery in Bethesda, Maryland. Stemming from early childhood memories of Guttman's maternal grandparent's home, she recreated the New Yorker wallpapered powder room from their no-longer extant house in Solana Beach, California. An ode to time past and the fortitude of remembering, this intimate installation invited visitor interaction, imploring one to sit on the toilet and attempt the Penny Dell crossword puzzle, the same brand her grandparent's preferred. The wallpaper for this installation came from four family collections, including the artist's, and has been digitally archived for future use.

This work was part of a group show titled Deep Dive and exhibited alongside the works of Molly Springfield and Suzanne Gold. Deep Dive was curated by Betsy Johnson.
